St. Kitts Saturday

We miss road trips where one hour in the car and you're someplace for the weekend with pine trees and mountains. Living on an island that's 60 square miles season after season forces us to find new in itsy-bitsy changes, like the trees on the road that are for once blooming orange. It forces us to find creative spots to play. We lapped around the island instead of road tripping to Jackson Hole, and being at Kate Spencer's Gallery was like getting apparated off this rock, to a place that is prettier, breezier, and closer to the clouds.

Happy June

At Swim Club today we saw our friends the squid, some white urchins that look like warm fuzzies, my favorite purple Jolly Rancher fish that I swim through, and this beautiful silver shark lying on the sandy floor. She had a hook in her cheek and was almost dead so we picked her up, swam with her to shore and fished the sharp object out of her mouth. By the time we set her free, she had already died. I felt so sad. We scooped her smooth muscley body up and she was taken to the vet. school for a necropsy. I was amazed. Seeing a little shark that close and feeling her soft scaly skin is something I didn't think would happen today or tomorrow or ever in the water.

Andrew was on the other side of the island surfing this morning while we were in the water. I'm sure he didn't think I'd come home with a shark in my car.

Andrew, enamored with sharks like every good surfer, showed us this Lemon Shark's holostylic jaw that projects forward both top and bottom. Never thought I would love looking at a shark this close, but isn't she beautiful? They have tiny gray scales and two rows of teeth.

Vicky and her pup Daisy play with Calvin when I swim. They watched the shark inspection from a distance.
